~ Patrick Feeney, Chief Operating Officer

Plumino Precision Fermentation USA, Inc., formerly known as BioKyowa, has been a cornerstone of Missouri’s biotechnology landscape for more than four decades. Established in 1982, BioKyowa represented the first major plant investment by a Japanese company in the state of Missouri. When production began in 1984, it became the first commercial Lysine-producing facility in the United States, supplying feed supplements for the swine and poultry industries.

Over the years, BioKyowa evolved from a single-product, feed-grade operation into a multi-plant facility producing high-quality amino acids through advanced biotechnology. Its products found applications in nutritional supplements, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other life science fields.

In 2025, the company entered a new era as Plumino Precision Fermentation USA, Inc., following Plumino’s acquisition of the pharmaceutical, food, and feed-grade amino acid and Human Milk Oligosaccharide (HMO) businesses and related assets from Kyowa Hakko Bio Co., Ltd.

Building on more than 70 years of biotechnology expertise pioneered by Kyowa Hakko Bio—whose origins trace back to the Biochemical Division of Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co., Ltd., founded in 1949—Plumino continues a legacy of excellence in amino acid fermentation technology.

Today, Plumino Precision Fermentation USA, Inc. carries forward that pioneering spirit, driving innovation in biotechnology and amino acid research while expanding the frontiers of life science. With deep scientific roots and a forward-looking vision, Plumino is poised to shape the next generation of precision fermentation technologies for a healthier, more sustainable world.
